Comox Valley: District staff moving forward with two Active Transportation projects including a Cumberland to Courtenay Multi-Use connector.

The Comox Valley Regional District has identified two high priority projects for Active Transportation including a 4.3 km Cumberland to Courtenay Multi-Use connector and 725 meter Royston Road Pedestrian and/or Multi-Use Path. Both projects are part of the Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP), approved in 2021. As proposed Cumberland to Courtenay Multi-Use path would include a combination of Roadside Multi-Use Path and Painted Buffered Bicycle Lane with an estimated project cost of $5.2 to $7.8 million. The Royston Road project will include 725 meters of Buffered Pedestrian Lanes and/or a separated Multi-Use Path to improve safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists along Royston Road, especially for students at Royston Elementary School. Project cost estimates are between $600,000 to $2.2 million depending on the extent of the project.

Courtenay: DP approved for two-storey commercial building near downtown..

A development permit application for a two-storey commercial building at the corner of Cliffe Avenue and 10th Street has been approved. The first storey will be occupied by the applicant Big Wheel Burger and another commercial tenant. The second storey will include offices and/or personal development services. The rooftop will be accessible to the tenants only. The company originally submitted an application in 2020, and deferred plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Big Wheel Burger is Canada’s first carbon neutral fast-food restaurant with four locations in Victoria and Nanaimo.

Tahsis: Pre-qualification underway for new Marine Facilities.

The Village of Tahsis is initiating a pre-qualification process to establish a select list of qualified General Contractors and Major Subcontractors for the demolition of existing structures and construction of new Marine Facilities. The project will involve the demolition of the existing boat launch panels, timber piers and piles, steel gangway and float. The project must be completed by the end of 2024.
