Port Alberni:  Referendum to decide future of the Echo Aquatic Centre.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District will proceed with a referendum to determine if residents will agree to Aquatic Centre to replace the existing Echo Centre build in 1967. Architects with HCMA Architecture + Design brought forward the results from the latest round of public engagement on the pool. The most popular result for an aquatic centre was a 260-square metre wave pool, as well as a 25-metre, six-lane lap pool and a hot tub, slide, fitness space, sauna, multi-purpose room and steam room. Architects will now develop a concept design and cost estimate, which will be presented to the ACRD board in a final report. Before a location and design can be chosen the ACRD needs to have a service plan and governance structure that shows how the cost of the pool will be apportioned between each different regional area. The Echo Aquatic Centre is over 55 years old. A new pool may cost over $70 million, depending on the chosen amenities.

Courtenay: Bill Moore Park upgrades for a new local amateur baseball team.

The Comox Valley Baseball Association (CVBA) and Courtenay Recreation have been in discussion regarding improvements to the baseball diamond at Bill Moore Park. If the park receives significant upgrades, the CVBA can create an amateur baseball team, adding to the 13 teams competing throughout BC. The proposed improvements include: Additional perimeter fencing to create entry points to the stands to create a stadium experience; Addition of a bullpen along the first base fence to enable separate warm-up pitching areas for the home and away teams; Relocation of perimeter fencing along third base to expand seating area; Additional fencing in front of dugouts to expand dugout areas for teams and players; and Installation of a scoreboard. These changes would be funded by the CVBA. In addition, the City will proceed with a park planning process for Bill Moore Park in 2024 as part of the Comox Valley Regional District’s Sports Field Strategy. The proposed changes fill well with the strategy vision to maximize quality, add capacity, and develop a baseball hub.

Campbell River: City and BC Housing to create 40 temporary housing units.

The City of Campbell River is partnering with BC Housing to build 40 units of temporary housing complete with support services on Homewood Road. The site was chosen for temporary housing because it’s already in use for overnight sheltering and is close to community services. An experienced non-profit organization will be selected through a fair and open process to operate the HEARTH Village and provide support services. The project is currently in the planning stage with Community Engagement in February and March. An open house will be held on March 20th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm (drop in any time), at the Campbell River Community Centre. For more information visit letstalkhousingbc.ca/campbell-river-homewood-road. BC Housing will be coordinating contractors for this project.
