Port Alberni: Development partner chosen for the Somass Lands.

The City of Port Alberni has announced that Matthews West Developments Ltd. (Sqaumish) has been selected as the development partner for the Somass Lands. With this partnership, the city expects to transform the former site of the Somass Division sawmill into a mixed-use site that provides public access to the waterfront. The city has since been demolishing what is left of the mill and remediating the site, preparing to redevelop the Somass Lands into a multi-use site with a mix of housing, park and open space, local small businesses and an enhanced natural environment. The next steps will be master planning, which will involve community engagement and input.

Powell River: 40 unit Apartment Building.

A development variance application has recently been submitted for height and parking. Once the variance is approved a development permit application is planned for 40 units. These market rental apartments are located on a parcel of land located between Field and Glacier Street. The zoning for the property is designated as RM-3, allowing for the construction of a multi-residential apartment building.

Comox 19 Wing: Proposed three bay Aircraft Maintenance Hanger

Defence Construction Canada has issued two advance notices for security clearances for an estimated $350 million in the construction contracts to support new long range patrol aircraft. Infrastructure and renovations are expected to be required at both 19 Wing Comox and 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia, with new 3 bay aircraft maintenance hangers and training facilities. It is currently anticipated that most requirements to support this program will be delivered through multiple Modified-Design Build contracts (anticipated two at each Base). Solicitation is expected to start in Summer 2024. This advance security clearance notice ends January 29; see the tender section for more details.
