Courtenay: NIC has received $14.2 million for an additional 75 childcare spaces.

North Island College has received funding for an additional 75 childcare spaces on the Comox Valley campus. The Province has provided $14.2 million to expand the existing Beaufort Childcare centre. NIC has been planning for this expansion since 2021, when a contract for the Architectural Services for the facility was awarded to Stantec. At the time, the intention was for a two storey building with childcare space on the main level and educational facilities on the second floor. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2024 and be complete in the fall of 2025.

Campbellton: Expanding the River Route Trail and additional Parks.

The Campbellton Neighbourhood Association is working on developing the River Route Parks & Trail Project, including the enhancements of three Campbellton parks and the extension of the River Route. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport awarded the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association $986,429 the two-year initiative, including enhancing and extending portions of the 7 km River Route and collection of parks that links seven existing trails in the Campbellton area. The route extensions would include new trails from 15th Ave to Quisnam Road along the Fortis and City water main line, and around Ocean Park from Robinson Road to Baikie Island and the Hwy 19 north bound bridge. Other project phases include a closing the right-of-way on Spruce Street for a new natural park and pergola, and purchasing the Ocean Blue property (north of Robinson Road) from the Nature Conservancy of Canada for $1 for a new parking lot, and converting the existing parking lot on Robinson Road into natural landscape.

Campbell River: Steep Slope Development Permit changes abandoned.

The City’s Committee of the Whole has reviewed the Steep Slope Engagement Summary and has abandoned proceeding with the OCP amendment. The City has been working on updating the Hazard Conditions (Steep Slope) Development Permit Guidelines since 2021. City staff recommended proceeding with the bylaw to align with EGBC professional practice guidelines and to update the current guidelines that report calls ‘vague and inaccurate’. The Committee had concerns that the recommended bylaw changes refers to vegetation management without addressing drainage conditions. Moving forward, the City will continue using the existing exemption form for vegetation maintenance.
