This design rendering shows proposed upgrades to the bus loop on Mackenzie Beach Road in Tofino. The bus loop is one of several design changes proposed as part of the Mackenzie Beach Road improvement project in Tofino.

Tofino: Mackenzie Beach Road improvements.

Council has approved a development variance permit for the Mackenzie Beach Road improvement project. The permit requests several variances including (not limited to): the Travel Lanes reduced from 3.5 to 3.0 meters each in consideration of the available width of the existing road footprint and to support traffic calming objectives and the MUP reduced from 3.0 to 2.0 in consideration of the available width of the existing road footprint and budgetary constraints. The proposed variance is a result of developing the final iteration of the Mackenzie Beach Road design, and the final step to be completed prior to tendering and constructing the road. The project is proposed to get underway in late 2023 or early 2024. A tender is expected to be issued in the next month.

Comox:  Proposed 16 duplex units in 8 buildings.

An open house for a proposed 16 unit townhome development was held last week. The Town of Comox requires that, prior to the submission of an application for a development, applicants must conduct a Community Consultation. As proposed, the project will include 8 duplex buildings on the vacant property on Anderton Road. The .99 acre property was purchased in May 2022 for $1,050,000 and is adjacent to Cameron Contracting’s new 15 unit townhouse complex. Construction on those units are wrapping up with 1350 sq.ft. 3 bed, 3 bath units for sale from $679,900 to $709,900.

Campbell River:  RFP for replacing the ferry terminal.

BC Ferries has issued a Request for Proposal from General Contractors or Builders to construct a 152 sq.m. terminal building at the Campbell River ferry terminal. The work also includes demolition of the existing terminal and improvements to pedestrian pathways and to vehicle entrance and exit areas. A site visit will occur on September 6, 10 am. Proponents wishing to take part in the site visit must register by emailing jeffrey.ferraby@bcferries.com no later than 2 pm on September 1. This tender closes September 15.
