Port Alberni: ​​​​​​construction has started on a 16 unit housing project for women and children.

IWCD has been selected as the builder for Oomiiqsu – Port Alberni Aboriginal Mother Centre. The project will house the Child and Family Wellness Office, Oomiiqsu Office, and 16 units for up to 48 women and children. The project is underway with the bulk excavation for the building completed. Upcoming work will include forming footings, installation of the site fence and signage. This project is a partnership between Huu-ay-aht First Nations, BC Housing, Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and Ministry of Child and Family Development. The anticipated occupancy date has been moved from August 2024 to December 2024. IWCD is hiring Carpenters, Apprentices, and Labourers for the Oomiiqsu site.

Campbell River: the Province announced a new 153 unit seniors long-term care facility.

The Province has announced a new seniors long-term care facility for Campbell River. The new three-storey long-term care facility will be on the west side of the North Island Hospital, with 153 long-term care beds, including a 10-bed hospice unit, a 26-bed convalescent care unit and a 26-bed specialized population unit. The care home will include two main buildings, with a hairdressing salon, space for activities and an adult day program. A stand-alone daycare facility will also be built with capacity for 37 children. The capital cost of the project is estimated to be approximately $134 million. Funding is from the provincial government through Island Health with a $53.6-million contribution from the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District. The facility will be built, owned and operated by Island Health. The project is in the procurement phase with construction expected to begin in 2025 and conclude in 2027.

Powell River: BC Ferries has issued a request for proposals for improvements at both terminals.

BC Ferries has issued a request for proposals for terminal improvements at both the Westview and Earl’s Cove terminal. The request includes architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, civil, traffic, environmental and geotechnical professional services at Westview – New Washroom Building and Waiting Area, Existing Waiting Room Renovation, Traffic Safety Improvements Project and Earl’s Cove – Replace Waiting Room and Washrooms, Sewage Treatment, Water Supply Upgrade Project. This request closes August 15.
