Tofino: 24-single family lots with suites and a four-storey 55-unit rental building.

The application for rezoning a portion of a 27 acre site on Hwy 4, 1 km from downtown, is moving forward with a public hearing held earlier this week. As proposed, the applicant intends to develop 24-single family lots with suites and a four-storey 55-unit rental building. The application has evolved several times as water consumption and other servicing concerns have reduced the scope of the project. The initial proposal in 2016 included 374 units of mixed residential development with a 48 unit motel, the second proposal included 178 units within three apartment buildings and a 48 unit motel, and the third included 226 units within two four-storey buildings and 126 single family lots.

Campbell River: Open houses scheduled for the Steep Slope Development Permit Guidelines.

The City of Campbell River will be hosting two open house information sessions for the Official Community Plan’s Hazard Conditions (Steep Slope) Development Permit Guidelines. During each session, staff will explain the development permit process that regulates land development and the updated exemptions that apply to maintaining vegetation on and near steep slopes. The same information will be presented at both events. Staff will be on hand to answer questions. No formal presentation is scheduled. The open houses will be held at the Campbell River Community Centre, Room 1, 401-11th Avenue or Thursday, June 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday, June 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. Learn more at www.getinvolved.campbellriver.ca/steepslopes.

Tahsis: $1.89 million grant received for relocating the fire hall.

Tahsis has received a $1.89 million grant for the fire hall relocation project from the Canada Community Building Fund. The previous firehall showed signs of rapid structural settlement in 2021. Preliminary design for conversion of the existing 4,000 sq ft wood shop building at the Captain Meares School for the new firehall was completed May 2022. The renovation will include an apparatus bay, an office/communications room, gear storage, utility rooms, washrooms, meeting areas and a kitchen. The Village is reviewing a quote for HVAC and Plumbing mechanical engineering from Designed Air Systems Limited for $12,480, and for Electrical Engineering from RB Engineering Ltd. for $20,000.
