Port Alberni: proposed new $2 million Cherry Creek fire hall.

The Cherry Creek Waterworks District will conduct a vote to obtain a stance from residents on financing a new fire hall for the Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department. The present fire hall is more than 60 years old, and no longer meets seismic requirements. Current plans propose a 6,500 square foot, steel-fabricated fire station with five bays that will include a workshop, utility room, offices, and a training room. A new hall would be built directly behind the current hall, formerly the Cherry Creek Community Park. The current fire hall would be kept and used for storage for equipment. The estimated budget for the project is $2 million, with $600,000 in gas tax funding provided by the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District.

Comox Valley Regional District: potential new pool, ice rink, and artificial sports turf.

The Comox Valley Regional District is reviewing recreation opportunities including building a new pool beside the Aquatic Centre, closing the pool and adding a new ice rink at the Sports Centre, and adding a new artificial sports turf at Vanier High School. All projects are dependent on borrowing and grant funding. The pools are a medium term priority (2026-2029), with cost estimates ranging from $12-35 million. In addition, all three facilities (Courtenay outdoor pool, Sports Centre and Aquatic Centre) are in need of capital expenses that could total $23 million over the next ten years. The artificial turf is considered a priority need, and construction could could begin in 2024 at an estimated cost of $5 million. Work on the ice sheet would occur between 2024-2026, and is estimated to cost $16 million.

Courtenay: new child care facility at Arden Elementary School.

A building permit with a value of $3,378,000 has been issued for the new child care facility at Arden Elementary School. In early 2022 the Province announced funding for 182 new childcare spaces in the Comox Valley. Thirty two of those spaces will be at Providences Living Society’s new Dementia Village in Comox, while the remaining 150 will be split evenly between Arden Elementary and Glacier View. Heatherbrae Builders has been selected as the construction manager for the projects and a tender for subtrades for the Arden project was issued in February.
