Tofino: New Community Recreation Facility estimated at $14.7 Million.

The District of Tofino will apply to the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) grant program in support of the Tofino Community Recreation Facility project. In the event that the District is successful in receiving a GICB grant for the Tofino Recreation Facility the immediate financial impact to the District will be to provide the municipal share of the building cost. Longer term financial impacts related to ongoing costs of operating and maintaining a building are also expected. The project budget based on the design drawings is estimated to be $14,691,875. Detailed design drawings for the Community Recreation Facility were completed in 2022. Should the District’s application to the GICB program be approved, the District will be required to extensively engage with the community regarding the financial implications of the project.

West Coast:  Removing extended daytime closers on Highway 4.

Construction on Highway 4 at Kennedy Hill to the West Coast is expected to reach a major milestone with removing extended daytime closers as of March 11. Until February 23 – Single lane alternating traffic continues between 7:00am-5:00pm and two way traffic from 5:00pm-7:00am. The bluff-blasting portion of the project removed more than 150,000 cubic metres of rock to widen and straighten 1.5 kilometres of highway along the bluffs over Kennedy Lake. With this stage of the project completed, the contractor will shift focus to road alignment and grade lowering, which includes building support structures. The project is expected to be substantially completed by summer 2022 with finishing touches continuing throughout the fall. For up-to-date information on Highway 4 conditions, visit DriveBC.
