WorkSafeBC is instituting compulsory training and licensing for asbestos abatement activities. Effective January 1, 2024, abatement contractors are required to obtain licenses and all individuals must undergo mandatory training and certification to ensure compliance with safety standards.

WorkSafe has implemented new training requirements for asbestos abatement. Learn more at Building Links.

There are four levels of training available, including Surveyor Safety for testing, Foundation Awareness for transporting of removed material,  Asbestos Safety for removing material, and Safety Leader for site supervisors. To be certified, you must complete a training program from an approved provider and pass a written exam. You must also agree to the terms and conditions and code of practice. Workers who are not certified in B.C. but have completed relevant asbestos abatement training (e.g., at an earlier time or in another province) may be eligible for reciprocity, equivalency, or recognition of prior learning.

The requirements only apply to work in relation to a building, and do not include working underground or removal of asbestos cement piping. However, Level 1 is recommended for anyone who does not need a certificate but who would benefit from general asbestos safety knowledge. For example, if you sometimes encounter asbestos-containing materials during your work (e.g., electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors, flooring contractors) but are not an abatement worker.
