BC Hydro is inviting interested parties to submit proposals for the civil construction works necessary for the seismic upgrade of the Campbell River’s John Hart Dam. This work represents much of the in-ground work for the project and must be completed by December 2026.

BC Hydro will be submitting an application to complete seismic upgrades on the John Hart Dam in Campbell River. The procurement process has begun.

The seismic upgrade is aimed at updating the 2,624-foot-long dam, which was constructed in the 1940s, to meet modern seismic standards to ensure it could survive a major earthquake. The project is expected to cost up to $822 million, and follows the last significant upgrade to the John Hart system, which was the completion of the John Hart Generating Station Replacement project.

A preliminary estimate predicts that more than 600 person years of work, with about 100 people working at the site at any one time, is anticipated during the six-year build out. Request for proposals for a spillway gate system is expected to be issued in 2025 or 2026. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and the upgrades are expected to be complete in 2029. A thorough application will be submitted to the BC Utilities Commission next week for approval.
