The propose West Coast Multiplex complex includes an ice rink that could be used both for ice skating and as a dry surface in the off season. This colourful drawing shows the ice being used under both conditions with people ice skating on the left and an event with seating on the left.

Tofino: planning for a proposed West Coast Multiplex arena and pool continues.

The proposed West Coast Multiplex recreational facility with an arena and pool is now being designed to be completed all at once, instead of the previously proposed phased project. The focus for the upcoming months will include updating the business plan, operating budget, schematic design/engineering, building cost estimates, plus additional Geotech assessments. The facility will be located on Airport Road near the Tofino Long Beach Airport. The West Coast Multiplex Society will re-apply for funding when the full facility capital and operating costs are finalized.

Courtenay: a recently proposed 17 lot development is for sale.

The City received a development permit application in October for 17 lots in two phases. This project is now for sale for $5.4 million. The 18.06 acres is located in West Courtenay amidst new residential subdivisions with Piercy Creek running through and dividing the property in several areas. As the DP application proposes, the property would be developed in two phases, with 15 lots to the southwest portion of the property in Phase 1 and 2 remaining lots in Phase 2. Phase 1 lots would be 900 m sq. and allow for single family dwellings or duplexes. Phase 2 lots would be 750 m sq. and will allow for single family dwellings. The property is currently zoned Residential Two Zone (R-2) and has a land use designation of urban residential. The real estate listing includes different details than provided in the application and suggests Phase 1 could include 21 duplex lots, Phase 2 could include 2 single family and 2 duplexes, with a potential for a future Phase 3, or rezone to higher density.

Campbell River: BC Ferries terminal renovations planned for 2023.

Council approved a Major Development Permit to update the BC Ferries Campbell River Terminal with a variance to reduce the front setback from 4.5m to 0.0m. The existing terminal will be undergoing a renovation to meet the future operational requirements of BC Ferries. The proposed upgrades include the replacement of the existing administration/ticketing building (including offices, washroom, locker room), a new secondary ticket booth for vehicles, frontage improvements with sidewalks, roadworks, and fencing, and a new sewer pump ashore. BC Ferries expects to issue a tender for the General Contractor in Spring 2023.
