For the past four years Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot has been working to build a new Adventure Sport Park in the Echo Centre Park. The Sport Park would include a new all-wheels skateboard park, all-wheels pump track, and Mountain Bike skills park with jump lines. This aerial photograph shows the potential location of the facility, but a park design has not yet been created, finalized or approved.  (Photo provided by CFAC).

Port Alberni: proposed skateboard park, pump track, mountain bike zone

Since 2020, Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot (CFAC) has engaged with the City on the concept of expanding the existing City-owned skate park including a new skateboard park, asphalt pump track and 3-line mountain bike skills & jump zone (collectively known as the Adventure Sport Park). The intent is for the development to take place on City land and to become a new City asset located within Echo Centre Park. CFAC is asking the public to complete an online survey at https://cfac.ca/ecdev/adventure-sport-park. If individuals or businesses donate to the City for the purpose of supporting the Adventure Sport Park, the donor will receive a tax receipt from the City, which would be deposited into a Parks, Recreation and Culture reserve fund for the park. If the Adventure Sport Park is not built, those donations will be retained for expenses related to the existing City-owned skate park. While the City has agreed to provide a letter of support to Community Futures to accompany future funding applications, the Parks, Recreation and Culture master plan must be complete before the City can decide on the degree of support for the project and location. The City issued a tender in January for the master plan and four companies have pre-qualified.

Union Bay: Detailed Design awarded for a new Fire Hall

The Comox Valley Regional District has awarded the contract for detailed design services for a new Union Bay Fire Hall to Simcic Architecture in the amount of $377,885. The existing fire hall no longer meets the needs of the department as it has limited parking access for staff, newer fire trucks don’t fit the bays and is generally too small. The new hall will be located on a different site, a rural lot just north of Washer Road, along 19A Island Highway.
