  • Bamfield: Community Hall construction update.
  • Courtenay: Building permit submitted for BC Housing’s 143 bed/unit project
  • Quadra Island: RFP issued for site preparation, foundation and slab for Recycling Depot.
Construction on the Bamfield Community Hall started last year, with a community event to construct the wood structure. Volunteers assembled 43,000 board feet of donated red cedar and 420 posts. Work is continuing and the project is approach lock-up stage. This aerial photo shows some of the volunteers and the finished frame from the 2024 community build.

Bamfield: Community Hall construction update.

The Bamfield Community Hall has now been framed, and construction is progressing toward achieving lock-up within the next month. Crews are currently installing the metal roofing, and window deliveries are expected in the coming weeks. Following the completion of these two scopes of work, the project will be temporarily paused pending the availability of additional funding. Remaining construction activities include mechanical and electrical systems, concrete slab work, drywall, painting, kitchen installation, interior finishing, exterior utilities, and landscaping. Securing further funding will be necessary before these components can proceed.

Courtenay: Building permit submitted for BC Housing’s 143 bed/unit project

BC Housing has provided an update to council on the proposed Permanent Shelter and Supportive Housing at 925 Braidwood. A development permit has been issued and a building permit application submitted. A tender is expected soon, likely in July, and construction is expected to begin in November. However, the shelter is not expected to be complete until July 2027 and the supportive housing in December 2027. Council expressed frustration with the changed timelines, and have requested BC Housing and the Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs explore all options to expedite the project. Once complete the shelter is expected to provide 73 beds, and the supportive housing 70 units.

Quadra Island: RFP issued for site preparation, foundation and slab for Recycling Depot.

The Comox Valley Regional District is seeking responses from suppliers for the site preparation and construction of the building foundation and slab for the new Quadra Island Recycling Depot. There is an optional briefing and site visit on Friday, June 27, commencing at 10 am. The opportunity closes July 17; see the tender section for the link to documents. A long-term lease for 657 Industrial Way is in place and geotechnical investigations have been completed. Following an unsuccessful request for quotations for supply and installation of a prefabricated steel building in summer 2024, additional quotations were sought directly from several prefabricated steel building suppliers in early 2025. A prefabricated steel building package has been ordered from a Canadian supplier. The CSWM approved a budget of $198,000 to complete site preparation and earthworks; Foundation and slab construction; Supply and installation of building doors; Building electrical and BC Hydro connection; and Site fencing and landscaping. Preparation work will occur this spring and summer, with the steel building package expected to arrive in August 2025. Assembly of the building is estimated to take three to four weeks, putting completion of the building in mid to late September.
