Comox Valley Airport: $4 million Apron Expansion Project

The Comox Valley Airport Commission has recently completed the design phase for their upcoming Apron Expansion Project and are currently out to tender for the construction phase. The overall project is expected to cost $4 million, and the Commission is seeking up to $2 million in grant funding from the BC Air Access Program. This project will expand the apron to the northwest to the fence line shared with the Air Force Museum Air Park with a retaining wall. The expansion is necessary to correct safety issues realized due to the increased size of aircraft servicing the airport extending well beyond the current safety lines, and into the designated space to taxi aircraft. The project will also enable the airport to incorporate pushback operations which will correct the numerous jet blast incidents that endanger passengers, staff, equipment and the building, as well as improve the customer experience by bringing larger aircraft closer to the terminal. This project is the first step in progressing the airport Master Plan which will lead to the final step of terminal expansion.

Campbell River: Fifty $5,000 grants for the construction or legalization of secondary suites

The City is offering $5,000 grants for the construction or legalization of secondary suites. On January 9, 2024, Council directed staff to establish the Secondary Suite Grant Program, to incentivize more housing options within the community. The program has now launched and Fifty grants are available. Homeowners may be eligible if: No other secondary suite grant applications have been made to the City for the property; The suite complies with all zoning requirements, including parking; They can provide an accepted building permit application and number dated after January 1, 2025; and the building permit for the secondary suite passes a final inspection. The program is funded through the Housing Accelerator Fund and adds to other City initiatives regarding suites, such as waiving fees for building permits for secondary suites, and new guides on developing secondary suites and missing middle housing. North Island: Construction underway to rebuild Telegraph Cove

Cleanup of the historic boardwalk is underway and rebuilding of the wharf and other structures destroyed in a New Year’s Eve fire is expected to start within the next month. The fire destroyed the whale centre, Old Saltery Pub, Killer Whale Café, Wastell Manor heritage house, Prince of Whales offices and staff housing, and a port. Several buildings are expected to be complete in time for the summer season. Repairing the boardwalk, installing a sewage-treatment plant and building for the boardwalk’s electrical distribution system will be constructed first, followed by offices for whale- and bear-watching companies. The Whale Interpretive Centre and pub and restaurant buildings will follow, but might not be completed or fully operational until 2026.
