Port Alberni: DP approved for 76-room hotel.

Port Alberni city council has agreed to issue a development permit for the city’s first new hotel since 1980. Three local First Nations — Tseshaht, Hupacasath and Huu-ay-aht — have partnered to build a Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham in Port Alberni. The hotel will be a four-storey building with 76 rooms, a pool and a waterslide, located in front of the Walmart on Johnston Road. The property is already zoned and subdivided for construction of the hotel and required the development variance permit in order to increase its maximum height to 14.1 metres.

Comox Valley: Moving forward with the Union Bay Fire Hall, second Artificial Turf, and Supportive Housing Land Acquisition.

All four Comox Valley Regional District Alternative Approval initiatives have passed, with less than 10% of eligible voters submitting elector response forms by the deadline. The initiatives are as follows: a borrowing bylaw in the amount of $2,755,000 for the Union Bay Fire Hall, a borrowing bylaw in the amount of $3 million for the second Artificial Turf at the Vanier track site, and amendments to the Emergency Shelter and Supportive Housing Land Acquisition Service and the Comox Valley Homelessness Supports Service. As proposed, the Emergency Shelter name will change to the Comox Valley Housing Service and enable the CVRD to create a housing corporation that would deliver affordable, non-market housing to the Comox Valley. In addition, it would the maximum annual allowable requisition for the service to $1,500,000 or $0.05592 per $1,000 of assessed value. The Homelessness Support Service will also increase the maximum annual allowable requisition to the greater of $550,000 or $0.02732 per $1,000 of assessed value and enable the CVRD Board to consider the provision of increased grants to community-based organizations to address homelessness in the Comox Valley.

Campbell River: Building permit issued for 8-unit townhouse project.

A building permit for $2.386 million has been approved for a new 8-unit townhouse project in Jubilee Heights. The project is beside the developer’s previously completed townhome project on the corner of Beaver Creek Blvd and S Alder Street. The City received the project application early 2024. The 3-storey 3 bedroom units are designed with a front patio and living space with kitchen on the first floor, 2 bedrooms and bathroom on the second, and master suite on the top floor with back balcony. Parking at the back of the building with 17 spots. The units will each be 12′ wide by 32′ long, with no garages, and will be available for purchase.
