  • Comox Valley: $30 million received towards extending wastewater services south
  • Port McNeill: $2.7 million Beach Drive landslide mitigation project is moving forward
  • Powell River: Proposed 40 to 50 multi-residential apartment building
This map shows how wastewater is currently managed in the Comox Valley. Homes and businesses in Royston and Union Bay depend on septic systems, many of which are aging or failing. No service currently exists for Union Bay Estates or K’ómoks lands to the south, two areas where development is planned for the future.

Comox Valley: $30 million received towards extending wastewater services south.

The Province of British Columbia has committed $30 million from the Critical Community Infrastructure Fund for the Comox Valley Sewer Extension South Project. The sewer extension will provide wastewater services to Union Bay and Royston through a new wastewater main that will connect to the existing regional treatment system. The new regional system will include service to the K’ómoks First Nation Treaty Settlement Lands south of Courtenay, where further development is planned. Should the treaty be ratified, development and economic growth of these lands will be an important part of reconciliation. A Public Advisory Committee is currently reviewing collection options as part of a Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) for the project. More information about project details, including specific cost estimates will be shared in upcoming engagement sessions later this spring.

Port McNeill: $2.7 million Beach Drive landslide mitigation project is moving forward.

Beach Drive landslide mitigation project phase III surveying is complete and legal consultation is ongoing. Tender documents are ready and expected to be posted on BC Bid within the next few days, with work proposed to begin in early July. Construction design is complete and permit applications have been approved. Most applications for Statutory Right of Ways have also been signed by the property owners and trees obstructing construction have been removed. Archaeological inspections have been performed in areas of concern throughout the project site. The Town of Port McNeill received $2,764,400 from provincial and federal funding for this project.

Powell River: Proposed 40 to 50 multi-residential apartment building.

In 2022, the applicant Veyron Properties was looking at the feasibility of developing market rental apartments on a property situated between Field and Glacier Street. This project is expected to move ahead, with a development permit scheduled to be submitted in the fall of this year. The property is zoned RM-3 for a multi-residential apartment building. The preliminary design proposes to build approximately 40 to 50 new units.
