BC Hydro Campbell River: Contract awarded for John Hart Dam civil works.

BC Hydro has awarded the contract for civil works for the John Hart Dam Seismic Upgrade Project to the Aecon-EBC General Partnership. The schedule for construction on the dam is summer 2023, following anticipated final internal approvals and the conclusion of the BC Utilities Commission process in spring 2023. The proposed project will address dam safety risks at the John Hart Dam and will significantly improve the facility’s ability to withstand a major seismic event. The project will also improve the reliability of the ageing spillway gate system and increase the dam’s spill capacity. The civil works contractor will upgrade the earthfill and concrete sections of the dam, and create an overflow spillway under the existing road deck. The hydro-mechanical work will replace the three spillway gates and related works. The Request for Proposals for this contract is currently planned to be issued in 2024, with the construction work proceeding after completion of the civil work.

Campbell River: Approvals moving forward for 142 acres with single family, suites and multi-family.

Campbell River council has approved third reading for rezoning 142 acres for single family, suites and multi-family. The rezoning will change the current Residential Estate (RE-1) Zone to Residential One A (R-1A) and Residential Multiple 2 (RM-2). As proposed, the project will include approximately 400 units built in 7 phases, with single-family and suites, and low to medium-density multi-family components. In order for the project to exceed past 100 units, secondary vehicle access and upgrades to roads servicing the development will be required prior to approvals. As per standard practice, city staff are recommending a parkland agreement for park spaces, trail connections, amenities and signage as a condition at the subdivision stage.

Comox: 60 lot subdivision proposed near airport.

An application for a preliminary layout review has been submitted for a new subdivision north of Highland Secondary in Comox and within a few kilometers from CFB Comox and the Comox Valley Airport. This new subdivision will be accessed from Prichard Road and Cambridge Road and is proposed to include 60 single family homes. Site preparation and road construction will take place once all approvals are in place. The 17 acre property was purchased in June 2020 for $2.5 million.
