Ucluelet: Council approved funding for a $21 million water treatment project.

Ucluelet council approved borrowing up to $13 million for upgrades to Ucluelet’s water treatment and storage capacity. The current estimated project cost is $20,745,500 with a $7,039 million federal grant announced last year. The proposed water treatment and capacity upgrades will include a water treatment plant at Mercantile Creek with a building and storage for chemicals, water treatment at Lost Shoe Creek with a building and a below grade residual tank and a proposed 1400 m3 Highway Reservoir installed beside the existing Highway Reservoir No.1. Construction may start in September 2023 with completion October 2026, however the timeline depends on design and several other required approvals before a construction tender can be released.

Powell River: Council is considering a 60 unit city-owned rental building.

The City of Powell River is considering a city-owned rental housing at 7104 Barnet Street and directed staff to prepare a report regarding the possible subdivision and rezoning of the property. The property is currently over 7 acres and located beside the RCMP detachment. In April 2021, the qathet Regional Housing Needs Report recommended a feasibility study for potential housing on the site. The study is now complete and is recommending a 55,000 sq.ft, 3 to 5 storey building with approximately 60 units ranging in size from 1 to 3 bedrooms. The study also recommends a funding model using BC Housing’s Community Housing Fund and CMHC’s grant fund with 70% subsidized and 30% market rent units. Next steps include a legal survey; environmental, geotechnical and archeological investigations; confirm offsite works and services with the planning department; confirm unit mix and more detailed building and site design. The City could also partner with a nonprofit society to take the project further.
