Courtenay: The North Island College’s 200 unit Student Housing Project is proceeding.

The North Island College in Courtenay is working with pre-qualified proponents for the Design-Build of their Student Housing Project. The project includes two four-storey buildings with over 200 units. This is the second-stage of the RFP process. NIC hopes to announce a successful proponent in late September. The college was awarded $57.3 million under the Homes for BC Plan in February for 157 individual and 60 family-specific student housing options. An additional $6.6 million will come from the BC Student Housing Loan Program and $2 million provided by North Island College. As proposed, the project includes two four-storey buildings with units ranging from two-bedroom family student housing to quad (individual bedrooms with shared living areas) and studio apartments for individual students. Nine of the units will be accessible for people with disabilities, and both buildings include common areas such as interfaith rooms, a community food garden, play areas and outdoor gathering spaces. The buildings are expected to include Mass Timber and to meet Step 4 of the BC Energy Code.

Comox: A five building industrial development is proposed near the airport.

A new multi-building industrial development is proposed for Comox near the airport. The 72,000 sq.ft. five-building project. will offer a range of unit sizes for rent or sale. A development permit is in the process of being submitted. These units will range in size from 900 to 2400 sq. ft. Types of businesses for this industrial/commercial space will include manufacturing, research and development, storage and warehousing, and other typical commercial and industrial uses. This property is also zoned to accommodate a brew pub and day care facility. This development will be built on property close to the Comox Airport which gives quick access to a transportation hub. Construction is scheduled to be completed in June of 2023.

Campbell River: The School District is proposing seven new child care facilities.

The Campbell River School District is moving forward with seven new child care facilities with a total cost of up to $7 million.  A tender for architectural or engineering firms was released last week. The facilities are in support of the District’s enrollment growth and program changes. The estimated construction cost is up to $1 million for any one location. Required services will include building design, permitting, preparation of construction tendering documents, and construction inspections. The selected architectural and/or engineering firm can provide requested services as either an inter-disciplinary firm or as a lead firm with sub-consultants.
