Port Alberni: Library renovations are on hold with bid results coming in over budget.

Vancouver Island Regional Library only received one bid for renovations at the Port Alberni Library branch and it was significantly above budget. The Vancouver Island Regional Library awarded the contract to develop design drawings and cost estimates for the renovation of the Port Alberni Library Branch to Low Hammond Rowe Architects in 2020. During planning, VIRL was advised of structural requirements that impact the proposed design. The Project Team and consultants are planning to re-tender later in the year.

Powell River: A new hanger is being built for a new 11 acre Aviation Industrial Park.

A building permit with a value of $1.8 million has been issued for a new 15,884 sq.ft. hangar on airport land. Council approved a 99-year lease in the fall of 2018 on this 11.5-acre parcel to develop an Aviation Industrial Park. A development permit for Phase 1 of a four phase development was approved in 2020. As proposed, Phase 1 includes a two-storey mixed-use building for a meeting hall, lounge and offices, and a separate hangar for maintenance and storage of commuter planes up to forty passengers. The proposed development could result in millions of dollars in investment at the airport and new tax revenue. Phase 1 Construction is expected to take 16 months.

Campbell River: DP approved for a new commercial office building.

Council approved a development permit application for a three storey commercial building for medical building, pharmacy and law firm. Each floor on the building is approx. 3950 sq.ft. and the project is proposing to include 10 parking spaces and a loading zone. As proposed, all parking is kept to the rear of the building, and side, buffered by landscaping from the street front. Vehicular access is from the lane. The building will be wood construction in a Pacific Westcoast style.
