Tofino: Proposed June construction start for new $77.55 million wastewater treatment plant.

The District of Tofino is looking to secure funding for their new wastewater treatment plant. Council authorized staff to engage with the provincial and federal government to secure financial support for a $77.55 million wastewater facility and earmarked up to $920,000 for detailed design work and pre-construction planning activities. Following an unsuccessful project tendering in 2020 where submissions were approx. 50% over budget, the District retained consultant expertise to determine the best course of action. In 2021, the District issued a negotiated request for proposals to the two previous bidders (NAC and AECON) and approved contracted services from North American Contractors (NAC) and engineering consultants WSP for project planning and pre-design work. The District will now proceed with staffing a Wastewater Treatment Plant project team. The provincial and federal governments would need to sign off on the new plan for funding approval; council anticipates receiving their response in May with hopes to begin construction on the facility in June and an estimated completion date of September 2024.

Courtenay: Design Build tender issued for the North Island College’s Student Housing Project.

The North Island College (NIC) has released a request for pre-qualification for Design-Build of their Student Housing Project. NIC is conducting a two-stage solicitation process initiated with this Request for Pre-qualification. A second solicitation will be issued to only those successful Respondents that are prequalified. NIC intends to shortlist up to three Proponents to be invited to participate in the next stage. A Virtual Introductory Meeting has been scheduled for 10:00 am on March 17. Contact Jason Wallace for a link to the meeting. As proposed, the Main Student Housing Building will house 157 single student beds in a variety of unit types, in addition to resident and campus community spaces. The Family Housing Building will contain twenty, 2‐bedroom units.

Campbell River: $13 million building permit issued for a new 70 unit apartment building.

A building permit for $13 million was issued last week for this 70 unit rental project. The 6 storey building includes 5 floors of residential on a parkade. Council approved a Development Permit for this project in October 2021. As proposed, the project includes 70 units in a mix of 9 three bedrooms, 29 two bedrooms, 21 one bedrooms, and 11 bachelor suites. The property received zoning approval in May 2021 and the density permitted is calculated as Floor Area Ratio.
