Courtenay: A DP has been submitted for Waichiay’s five-story affordable housing project.

A Development Permit application for 40 units of affordable housing for Indigenous elders and singles has been submitted. Council adopted an Official Community Plan and Zoning Amendment bylaw for this five-storey project in November. The applicant, Wachiay Friendship Centre in partnership with M’akola Housing Society, intends to redevelop their parking lot and build bachelor and one-bedroom residential units. Units will meet the BC Housing definition of affordable housing, with 20 percent of rents set at $375 or the income assistance shelter rate, 30 percent at the low end of the market, and half geared to income through subsidized rent. The project has been accepted for $3.8 million through the BC Housing Community Fund. M’akola Housing Society will operate the building upon commission.

Powell River: Nine of the 24 units at Life Cycle Housing’s project are now under construction.

A building permit with a value of $3.5 million has been issued for nine units in this multi-family development. Life Cycle Housing has partnered with BC Housing to build 24 affordable housing units to replace eight one-bedroom units previously on the site. The new development includes 8 one-bedroom, 12 two-bedroom and 4 three-bedroom units in two townhouses and two apartment blocks. Once construction is complete, former residents will be offered an opportunity to move into the new homes. Construction is expected to be complete by summer of 2022. The permit information does not include the Builder’s information.

Campbell River: Civil work has started for a 37 unit townhome development.

This project has a new owner and a general contractor. Akers Property Solutions will be building out this 37 unit townhome development. Handyside Development Corporation originally submitted the Major DP application in May 2020 with approval issued in October 2021. As proposed, the units would be two and three bedrooms, with three bathrooms, and garages. The two storey buildings will be divided into nine buildings in a combination of four duplexes, a triplex, a four-plex, a six-plex and a two eight-plexes. The two properties on Evergreen Road total just over 3 acres. Civil work for the project is now underway and all units will be available for sale.
