Ucluelet/Tofino: Tenders coming soon for a $4.15 million organics processing facility.

Tenders are expected to be released in January for the processing technology and construction of a $4.15 million organics processing facility at the West Coast Landfill between Ucluelet and Tofino. This is phase two of the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District regional organics diversion project. In May of 2021, Tetra Tech was awarded a contract for the design of a compact facility at the West Coast Landfill. Those designs are now 60% complete, and the project is working towards the 90% detailed design. Construction is scheduled to be completed late Summer 2022 and operational by Fall 2022. The project has proposed an ASP system similar to the pilot currently run by Tofino Urban Farms (TUF). The major components of the ASP system are: Aeration blowers; On-grade high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes; Flexible pipe connections; and Temperature probes. Components of the composting facility that are incorporated into the conceptual design include: Receiving Building; Active Composting Windrows and Building; and; Compost Curing Windrows.

Courtenay: The new 93-unit Holiday Inn Express under construction.

The new Holiday Inn Express in Courtenay is now under construction with a $9.58 million building permit. Once complete, the project will be a 55,818 sq.ft facility at the corner of Hunt and Ryan Roads. The four-storey, wood frame building will include 93 units, an indoor swimming pool, fitness facility and a 100 seat multi-purpose meeting room. A zoning amendment bylaw was adopted in May, and a development permit was approved in July. The completed hotel is expected to provide 47 local full time jobs.

Campbell River: DP application under review for a 60-unit apartment building.

Campbell River staff are viewing a Major Development Permit application for a 60-unit, market rental apartment building at 2221 Dalton Road. The project is proposed to include a five storey rental building with 35 two-bedroom and 25 one-bedroom units each with a balcony and five appliances. Council approved the Zoning Bylaw amendment for the property in October. The property was zoned RM-3 in 2005 for a six storey, 37-unit building. The amendment increased the residential density to 60 units. The project will include frontage improvements along Dalton Road and new a crosswalk at the eastern point of the intersection of Westgate Road and Dalton Road.
