New Home Registry Report in Around Town

According to the BC Housing New Home Registry statistics for Alberni-Clayoquot to North Island and Powell River, the number of newly registered homes (sf) and multi-units (mu) increased between 2020 and 2021, but is still down from 2019.  In 2021 there were 1473 homes/units built compared to 1285 in 2020 and 1584 in 2019.

Data from the first two months of 2022 show home registrations are up by 2.5% from 2021, with a total of 9,107 new homes. Multi-family homes make up the majority of that increase, with 7,400 new multi-family units for a 5.5% increase, while single detached homes decreased 8.8% with a total of 1,707 new units. 

In February, Campbell River was one of several communities that saw more new multi-unit homes than single detached homes. Most multi-family units are duplexes or buildings of 5 to 50 units. An increase in rental stock is contributing to the increase in multi-family units. So far in 2022, 2,973 new purpose-built rental units have been registered. When compared with the same period in 2021, this is a 104.5% increase.
