New BC Trades Definitions Guide Released in Around Town
BCAA and its BC Trade Definitions Committee have released the Guide to BC Trades Definitions. The Definitions outline over 75 trade scopes of work and created specifically for trade and general contractors. It outlines detailed trade scopes and inclusions/exclusions to support industry in understanding and coordinating construction work across the province.

The Trade Definitions Guide is intended to provide clarity to the bidding process, assist in contract negotiations and eliminate potential trade conflicts on the jobsite by giving clarity to scope. It can also be used as an educational document.
General Contractors and trade contractors are encouraged to incorporate the trade definitions into their bid documents, quotes, scopes of work, and contract documents. These definitions do not add work items nor exclude them from a prime contract, but when work under each scope is included in the contract documents, the trade definitions give guidance on which party is responsible to do that work.
The Guide is provided for industry use, and users are welcome to leverage and incorporate the trade definitions as they see fit. The goal of the guide is to establish a baseline standard for reference. While parties are free to clarify their intended scope as needed, this guide aims to provide a common framework that everyone in industry can use to facilitate consistency and support the construction process, regardless of geographical location.
