2023 Building Permit Statistics – Comox Valley and Campbell River in Around Town
Compared to 2022, total building permit values in 2023 increased by 17% per cent from $334 to $391 million, while the number of permits issued decreased by 5 per cent from 852 in 2022 to 803 in 2023.

- Comox: Detailed design approved for the Lazo Greenway Multi-Use Path.
- Courtenay: Four-storey mixed use building with 50 residential units.
New BC Codes in Around Town
The new BC Codes take effect on March 8 2024, except for adaptable dwellings and earthquake changes which take effect in 2025. These codes will apply to building permits applied for on or after that date. Permits in place before March 8 will generally not be affected by the changes.

Campbell River Development Servicing Bylaw Update in Around Town
The City and Urban Systems are updating Campbell River’s Subdivision and Development Servicing Bylaw with a heightened reliance on the Master Municipal Construction Documents. The MMCD provide standard design guidelines, construction specifications and standards for general municipal infrastructure. City of Campbell River specific supplements to the MMCD will be included in the new bylaw.

WorkSafeBC is instituting compulsory training and licensing for asbestos abatement activities. Effective January 1, 2024, abatement contractors are required to obtain licenses and all individuals must undergo mandatory training and certification to ensure compliance with safety standards.
