Around Town: Town of Comox meets new development application processing timelines

October 26, 2016

As part of its Strategic Plan for 2012, Council established the goal of reducing development application processing timelines. In response to Council’s strategic goal, the Planning Procedures Bylaw was replaced in 2014 with one that requires earlier and expanded public consultation, delegates additional permit issuing authority to staff and streamlines the development review process.

The Town of Comox has mets its 2012 commitment to reduce development application processing timelines.

In addition, a clearer application process was identified, including a detailed application checklist. Feedback from the development community has been positive.

“We heard from the development community that they were experiencing some challenges in navigating the application process,” Mayor Paul Ives states. “We have responded accordingly, and results are extremely positive.” Following implementation of the new Planning Procedures Bylaw, average processing times have been reduced to those either at or substantially below Council targets, as follows:

  • Official Community Plan and Rezoning Applications: by 54% to 80 days,
  • Development Permit Applications: by 59% to 95 days, and
  • Development Variance Permit Applications: by 80% to 40 days
