Around Town: BC Assessment Property Photo Update Initiative Coming to Central Vancouver Island

September 17, 2015

A new program known as the BC Assessment Property Photo Update Initiative will be in the central Vancouver Island area in mid-September taking photos of residential properties from Duncan to Campbell River, including Powell River and Alberni rural areas. This program replaces the previous door-to-door program, and instead uses digital cameras mounted inside a clearly marked van to take photos of residential properties from the street.

BC Assessment has launched the Property Photo Update Initiative to more efficiently and cost effectively update their ever-increasing inventory of properties. This technology has already been successfully used throughout Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan, Kamloops and Nanaimo.

These photos are part of the information BC Assessment uses to arrive at a fair assessment for residential property in BC. The new program provides a more timely, accurate, and equitable assessment to all property owners.  BC Assessment will photograph only the public street front of a home including the civic  (street) address number.

Photos will be taken by a white van with magnetic signs on both sides stating BC Assessment Property Photo Update Initiative. No personal information related to images of people on the property, visible signage, or the interior of the residence will be retained.
